A DOZEN TIPS FOR ORDERING YOUR WEDDING STATIONERY

#1 FIRST THINGS FIRST

Your wedding invitations and/or Save the Dates are often the first peek inside your wedding and give your guests the feel for the day. It sets the tone for your event and should really be a reflection of your wedding style. Whether your theme is modern or classic, vintage or glam, use your stationery to reflect that style as a sneak peek into your occasion.

#2 ORDERING

Allow anywhere from six to twelve weeks to order your stationery which allows ample time for the proof process, production, delivery to you and then delivery to your guests with enough time left to respond with an RSVP or meal choices. Consider when you would like to send them to your guests and how much time it will take you to stuff, stamp and send them out. We recommend making an evening of this with your bridal party, Mom or partner. Grab some champagne, stick, seal and repeat.

#3 SPEAKING OF DATES… when should you send things out?

Save the Dates: Anywhere from 6 months to a year before
Invitations: 8-12 weeks before the wedding
RSVP’s: Ask for your replies back no later than four weeks before the wedding. Make it clear on the reply card the date you would like them returned. This gives you time to get an accurate headcount to your vendors (caterer, venue, rentals, etc) and time to order your other paper goods for your wedding day.

#4 ADDRESS PRINTING Leave the addressing to us!

Skip printing labels at home and opt for envelope address printing or even hire a calligrapher for your invitation envelope addressing. This will save you a considerable amount of time and will always result in a much more beautifully addressed envelope.

#5 BUDGET

Invitations can range anywhere from $1 – $100 per invitation. Consider what you want to spend and share your budget with your stationer. Print method is going to have the greatest influence on price. Digital printing, foil stamping and letterpress printing are just a few of the printing methods you will see while shopping invitations. If you want to splurge on something…make it the invitation. The other pieces serve as support for that.

#6 QUANTITIES Count per Household not per Head

When you go to order, don’t confuse your headcount with the number of households you will be sending invitations to. Remember most addresses you will be mailing to have two or more of your guests.

#7 WHO?

Make sure your envelopes are addressed very clearly to explicitly name who is invited. For example, if you’re inviting your favorite couple friends, Julie and Ben, make sure to address the envelope to ‘Mr. and Mrs. Ben and Julie Chaet versus “The Chaet Family”. That way we don’t bring our two kids, Aunt Peg and our occasional house guest Shirley.

#8 ENVELOPE SEALING… Stick don’t Lick

Save your tongue and use a glue stick to seal your invitations. Not only is much more efficient, it looks a million times better.

#9 WEIGH IT

Take it to the post office before you purchase postage and stamp them all. These are the most important pieces of mail you’ll ever send (okay maybe not ever) but they’re time sensitive and you want to make sure they get to your guests. Make sure the post office weighs them and that you purchase the proper amount of postage. Also, when you have an oversized or thick, decorative invitation be safe and have them hand canceled at the post office.

#10 WEDDING DAY PAPER GOODS – Don’t forget the extras

As you’re working with a stationer or buying online make sure to consider your wedding day paper goods when your budget planning and ordering. Often times these pieces will need to be ordered closer to your wedding day so you have a proper count (ceremony programs, place cards, table numbers, menus, signage, etc) but these are pieces you might like to decide the designs of before hand. Your paper goods are a really essential key to carrying your theme and tone of your wedding through out your entire event.

#11 SAY THANK YOU

Don’t forget your thank you stationery! To round out the event and continue your theme and style to the very end, purchasing coordinating thank you stationery is a must. This can be done very affordably and will often times include the return address printing or a return address stamp. Etiquette says you have up to three months to send out your thanks. I would recommend doing them sooner rather than later to make the best impression.
